1980 Topps and 1981 Topps
The 1980 checklist includes Phil Simms’ rookie; 1981 is widely associated with Joe Montana’s number 216. The 1981 set has 528 cards, so the Montana is a landmark rather than a substitute for a complete checklist. Look for wax residue, gum staining and handling damage on the reverse as carefully as on the portrait.
1982 Topps and 1983 Topps
Lawrence Taylor and Ronnie Lott are notable 1982 rookie subjects, while Marcus Allen appears in 1983. These years make a natural bridge between the Montana and 1984 quarterback issues. A player’s college career or draft year can precede the year on the familiar Topps rookie card.
1984 Topps: NFL and USFL are different
The regular NFL issue includes John Elway and Dan Marino rookies. The separately issued 1984 Topps USFL set has its own checklist and is covered in the specialty-issues guide. A listing titled only “1984 Topps football” is insufficient when comparing Steve Young, Reggie White or other USFL subjects.
1985 Topps and 1986 Topps
The black-bordered 1985 design readily shows edge wear. The 1986 set has green football-field borders and includes Jerry Rice’s rookie. Scan the colored perimeter under even light; an attractive central photograph does not compensate for concealed border damage.
1987 Topps, 1988 Topps and 1989 Topps
These late-decade paper sets are distinct from the smaller Topps American/UK releases. Bo Jackson’s 1988 Topps card is a familiar collecting target. In 1989, Score and Pro Set also offered football sets, so a player may have several recognized same-year cards with different designs and checklists.
Grade premiums and personal preference
Many cards from this era survive in large quantities, but that does not make every high-grade copy common. Assess the exact card’s centering and surfaces instead of applying a general decade label. For an album collection, readable photographs and consistent presentation may matter more than chasing the highest number.
