Topps Football Specialty Issues

1970 Topps Glossy and 1971 Topps Game Cards

Glossy inserts and game cards are separate formats from regular player cards. Preserve the original corners and edges, and identify the insert against its own checklist. A game instruction or functional marking is part of the intended design, not automatically a printing error.

1977 Topps Mexican

Spanish-language text distinguishes the Mexican release from the ordinary U.S. issue. Inspect the reverse and the complete product identification. A familiar portrait or card number is not enough to establish the language edition, and a U.S. card cannot substitute for a missing Mexican-edition card.

1984 Topps USFL and 1985 Topps USFL

Both commemorate a separate professional league. Steve Young, Reggie White and other players connect these cards to later NFL careers, but the printed league and issue remain USFL. Keep each year separate and distinguish complete factory sets from partial groups assembled later.

1987 Topps American / UK and 1989 Topps American / UK

The Topps American name refers to issues marketed for the United Kingdom, not the standard U.S. annual set. The smaller format and educational presentation are useful identifiers. Include American or UK in collection records so a familiar player name does not lead to the wrong version.

1990 Topps Tiffany

Tiffany is a distinct treatment of the 1990 issue, not a synonym for any clean, glossy card. Verify stock, finish, back and provenance against recognized examples. A seller’s adjective “glossy” is not sufficient evidence; compare the actual object with the cataloged Tiffany version.
