Liberty Cap half-cent types

The series spans 1793–1797. Liberty faces left on the 1793 issue and right on later dates. PCGS further distinguishes the larger 1794 portrait from the smaller-head format of 1795–1797.

Read the reverse denomination and compare the full portrait arrangement. A Liberty Cap large cent is a different denomination despite its related imagery. When photographs are enlarged to equal dimensions, written identification becomes especially important.

Direction is a useful first diagnostic

Begin with the direction Liberty faces, then inspect date, cap, pole and border. This sequence gives a novice an orderly way to recognize the main designs without jumping immediately into specialist die-variety claims.

Use a reference image oriented correctly. Mirrored or rotated presentation can mislead a comparison, so check the lettering before using an image as evidence. The pictured 1794 half cent represents the right-facing larger-head type.

Preserve the surface description

For early copper, an adjectival grade without surface notes may leave out much of the story. Request photographs that reveal texture across the fields and around the devices. Strongly saturated color can hide roughness, while harsh light can overstate small marks.

If a holder identifies a surface problem, keep that wording with the grade in your inventory. Do not translate it into an invented numeric discount. Different collectors can reasonably prefer different appearances while agreeing about the documented condition.

Keep the project small enough to understand

A broad type study might use a left-facing and a right-facing example; a more detailed one can separate the 1794 head from the later format. Define which level you intend before expanding the collection.

For every attribution, record its reference and the visible diagnostics supporting it. If an edge or detail is unavailable inside a holder, note that limitation instead of pretending you inspected it. A short, accurate catalogue entry is more useful than an elaborate description built from unverified assumptions.
