Morgan dollars: a long series with a final return
Historic Morgan dollars were struck from 1878–1904 and again in 1921. Their portrait is George T. Morgan’s Liberty design. Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City and Denver appear across the series, but they did not all produce every date.
Choose whether your project is a one-per-year set, a date-and-mint set or a type study. A 1921 coin can satisfy a date slot while leaving a mint-focused project incomplete. The word “Morgan” does not define the boundaries of the collection.
Mintmarks sit on the reverse below the wreath bow; historic Philadelphia issues have no mintmark there. Keep a reverse image even when the obverse is the main display photograph. The existing mintmark-focused guide is a useful companion to a date checklist.
If a VAM attribution is part of the appeal, preserve the date, full attribution and diagnostic source. The variety name is a separate field from numeric grade, and a title alone is not a substitute for matching the relevant details.
Peace dollars: relief and interrupted production
The Peace dollar, designed by Anthony de Francisci, began in late 1921. Its Liberty portrait and reverse eagle differ clearly from the Morgan design. PEACE appears at the base of the reverse, providing a simple confirmation when both sides are available.
The 1921 issue uses high relief. The design was lowered in 1922 for regular production, although specialist high-relief 1922 pieces also exist. Do not promote an ordinary 1922 coin into a special relief attribution from a dramatic lighting angle.
Historic Peace-dollar production runs through 1928 and resumes for 1934–1935. A continuous 1921–1935 grid would therefore create nonexistent regular-date slots. Build the checklist from actual issues.
A two-coin 1921 display is a design comparison; it does not automatically compare identical striking characteristics. Explain the relief difference and give each coin its own condition observations.
Keep historic coins separate from modern tributes
Modern Morgan and Peace issues belong to a later Mint program. If your collection includes them, give them a separate section with their own specifications and finishes. Sharing a design name does not make two objects the same historical issue.
The featured 1924-S Peace dollar illustrates the lower-relief historic design after the first-year transition. It is not a 1921 high-relief example. Good captions make that boundary visible before the reader studies a grade or price.
For any pair, use consistent image scale and neutral lighting where possible. Explain your preference in visible terms rather than treating a brighter photograph as proof of a better coin.
