The original Saint-Gaudens double eagle

The historic series spans 1907–1933. Its 1907 High Relief form carries the date MCMVII in Roman numerals; the design was then adapted to a lower relief suitable for production. The series also includes No Motto and With Motto formats.

A Roman-numeral date should be transcribed and interpreted, not merely described as unusual. Match the exact design and issue to a reference before comparing it with an Arabic-date example. Relief is part of the type identification, not a synonym for a high numerical grade.

Look for evidence of the claimed relief

A face-on photograph compresses depth. For a coin described as High Relief, use the complete certification attribution and photographs that show the sculptural form under suitable lighting. A dramatic shadow alone does not establish the type.

The illustrated 1907 High Relief obverse is a reference for that particular issue. It should not be used to imply that a later ordinary-relief date has the same surfaces or manufacturing characteristics. Your caption is where that distinction becomes clear to another viewer.

Modern adaptations need separate slots

The modern American Gold Eagle adapts Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty, but it is a separate program. Read the complete denomination, date and reverse design rather than identifying a coin solely from Liberty’s pose.

If your collection celebrates the artwork across eras, include both deliberately and explain the relationship. If it is a historic double-eagle set, keep modern coins outside its completion count. A shared image can connect two projects without making their issues interchangeable.

A record that remains useful

Preserve date, mint, relief, motto type, grade and provenance as distinct fields. Avoid current rarity rankings or auction-record claims unless you have checked their dates and exact scope. Historic production figures do not by themselves establish present survival.

For an individual purchase, compare the actual surfaces, not just the design’s reputation. Open fields, rays and exposed high points deserve photographs at more than one angle. Let the reason for choosing the specimen be visible in your notes, whether that reason is a type distinction, balanced appearance or documented history.
