Liberty Seated dime and half-dime identity

The half dime spans 1837–1873; the dime continues from 1837 to 1891. Read HALF DIME or ONE DIME within the reverse wreath. Use that wording before judging size from an online image, because photographs are usually enlarged independently.

The families include No Stars, stars around Liberty and later Legend Obverse designs. In 1860, the national inscription moves to the obverse on the regular Legend Obverse format. Arrows beside the date mark additional subtypes; half-dime arrows occur in 1853–1855, while dimes also have an 1873–1874 arrow subtype.

A type checklist should describe visible changes

Write your checklist in words you can test against photographs: denomination, stars or legend, date arrows and the relevant drapery detail. Do not create a single “Seated Liberty” slot and assume every coin satisfies it. Decide whether you want one representative of the broad family or a sequence of its main designs.

For a learning collection, an arrows example beside a no-arrows example makes the design change easier to remember. The comparison is strongest when similar wear allows the viewer to concentrate on the changed features instead of one coin simply looking brighter.

Read small inscriptions without inventing certainty

Ask for full obverse and reverse images before requesting an enlargement of a mint mark. A reverse close-up should retain enough wreath and lettering to show orientation. Holder prongs can obscure a small mint mark, so an unclear image should remain an open question in your notes.

On circulated pieces, examine the shield, Liberty’s body and the wreath together. A sharply visible letter is one observation, not a complete grading system. Surface texture, rim condition and the balance of detail still matter.

Use the holder to narrow the research

Transcribe the denomination exactly, including H10C or half-dime wording when present. Match year, mint and subtype to the reference entry before looking at comparisons. Dimes and half dimes should never share a price comparison simply because the portrait resembles the same design.

The illustrated 1860-O half dime is a family representative. It does not illustrate every subtype discussed here. Keep that distinction in your own catalogue: one photograph can introduce a series, while a complete type study requires images of each actual design change.
