Wheat reverse, 1909–1958
The Wheat reverse identifies the Lincoln-cent period from 1909 through 1958. Coins from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco appear within the series. A checklist should record actual date-and-mint combinations rather than assuming all three mints struck every year.
Start by defining whether you want one coin per year, a date-and-mint set or a small type study. These plans can share the same first purchase while diverging greatly afterward. Write the scope at the top of your inventory.
MS and PF answer different questions
NGC’s grade prefix separates Mint State coins from Proofs. A Proof is not simply a circulation coin with a larger number. Keep the manufacturing category visible when comparing two pieces of the same date.
If you add Proofs to a circulation collection, give them their own row or section. This avoids checking off a circulation slot with a coin that belongs to a different project. The same discipline helps when a listing title shortens the full certification description.
RD belongs beside the grade
NGC’s RD designation requires at least 85 percent original red color; RB and BN describe progressively smaller retained proportions. Color is recorded alongside grade rather than replacing it. The 1943 steel issue also reminds collectors that not every Wheat cent belongs in a bronze-color comparison.
Review both sides for spots and consistency of appearance. Warm lighting can make a photograph look redder, while a cool background can change the viewer’s impression. Save the original listing photographs so later comparisons do not depend entirely on memory.
Varieties and exceptional claims
For a doubled-die or unusual-composition claim, identify the exact reference attribution and request the relevant diagnostics. A dramatic title should lead to a more careful evidence check, not a faster conclusion. Keep an unresolved coin outside the confirmed variety checklist.
The pictured 1953-D NGC MS 67 RD cent illustrates a Denver Mint State example with a red designation. Its role here is educational; the photograph does not establish the condition or value of another 1953-D cent. A useful record explains why each individual coin fits its intended slot.
